Nike Air Max 1 Sculpture Created Using Upcycled E-Waste

Explore the inspiration and process behind this piece.

The Nike Air Max 1 was a revolution in shoe design — the first sneaker with a visible Air unit in the midsole, a window cut into the sole so consumers could see the technology working inside. Tinker Hatfield's 1987 design made the invisible visible. Digital Air Max 1 continues that logic: built from circuit boards, data cables, wire, leather, and found materials, this sculpture transforms the AM1's celebrated silhouette into a form that makes the interior life of discarded electronics equally visible, equally considered.

A piece about seeing what's inside things — the Air unit, the circuit board — and finding it worth looking at.

The sculpture includes a custom display base and carrying case.

This sculpture pays tribute to one of the most celebrated sneaker designs of all time—reimagined through sustainability and craftsmanship. Built from upcycled e-waste and found materials, this piece transforms technology into art, merging cultural nostalgia with environmental awareness. The sculpture highlights both the innovation of Nike’s design legacy and my ongoing exploration of form, function, and creative reuse.
